Clinical Experts
Clinical experts and other relevant experts are best positioned to describe how clinical practice works in real-world healthcare settings. This is why the EU HTA Regulation stipulates that, alongside patients, clinical experts must be involved in both JCAs and JSCs.
Why clinical expert participation is important
Their expertise helps ensure that the procedures are based on real clinical practice and a good understanding of the disease, so that the assessments truly reflect what matters to patients and healthcare professionals.
Clinical experts and other relevant experts may:
- Share their experiences, expectations and concerns about the condition and currently available treatments.
- Provide input to assessors on aspects that are relevant to clinical practice (e.g. the practicalities of routine clinical care or the relevance of clinical endpoints).
- Review documents and comment on whether they are relevant from a clinical perspective.
- Participate in online meetings as part of the procedure.
Clinical experts are compensated for their time. In JCAs, their names are acknowledged in the published reports.
